The β-ensemble with cubic potential can be used to study a quantum particle in a double-well potential with symmetry breaking term. The quantum mechanical perturbative energy arises from the ensemble free energy in a novel large N limit. A relation between the generating functions of the exact non-perturbative energy, similar in spirit to the one of Dunne- Ünsal, is found. The exact quantization condition of Zinn-Justin and Jentschura is equivalent to the Nekrasov-Shatashvili quantization condition on the level of the ensemble. Refined topological string theory in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit arises as a large N limit of quantum mechanics. Minimize

The Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of β-ensembles with polynomial potential and
N=2
$$ \mathcal{N}=2 $$ supersymmetric gauge theories in the Ω-background is intimately related to complex one-dimensional quantum mechanics. Multi-instanton corrections in quantum mechanics, inferable from exact quantization conditions, imply additional non-perturbative corrections to the Nekrasov-Shatashvili free energies. Besides filling some of the gaps in previous derivations, we present analytic expressions for such additional non-perturbative corrections in the case of SU(2) gauge theory expanded at strong coupling. In contrast, at weak coupling these additional non-perturbative corrections appear to be negligible. Minimize

This thesis is concerned with real mirror symmetry, that is, mirror symmetry for a Calabi-Yau 3-fold background with a D-brane on a special Lagrangian 3-cycle defined by the real locus of an anti-holomorphic involution. More specifically, we will study real mirror symmetry by means of compact 1-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective space (at tree-level) and non-compact local P2 (at higher genus). For the compact models, we identify mirror pairs of D-brane configurations in weighted projective space, derive the corresponding inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations, and solve for the domainwall tensions as analytic functions over moduli space, thereby collecting evidence for real mirror symmetry at tree-level. A major outcome of this part is the prediction of the number of disk instantons ending on the D-brane for these models. Further, we study real mirror symmetry at higher genus using local P2. For that, we utilize the real topological string, that is, the topological string on a background with O-plane and D-brane on top. We study the topological string on local P2 with O-plane and D-brane at its real locus, using three complementary techniques. In the A-model, we refine localization on the moduli space of maps with respect to the torus action preserved by the antiholomorphic involution. This leads to a computation of open and unoriented Gromov-Witten invariants that can be applied to any toric Calabi-Yau with involution. We then show that the full topological string amplitudes can be reproduced within the topological vertex formalism. We obtain the real topological vertex with trivial fixed leg. Finally, we verify that the same results derive in the B-model from the extended holomorphic anomaly equation, together with appropriate boundary conditions. We develop the real vertex formalism for the computation of the topological string partition function with D-branes and O-planes at the fixed point locus of an antiholomorphic involution acting non-trivially on the toric diagram of any local toric Calabi-Yau manifold. Our results cover in particular the real vertex with non-trivial fixed leg. We give a careful derivation of the relevant ingredients using duality with Chern-Simons theory on orbifolds. We show that the real vertex can also be interpreted in terms of a statistical model of symmetric crystal melting. Using this latter connection, we also assess the constant map contribution in Calabi-Yau orientifold models. We find that there are no perturbative contributions beyond one-loop, but a non-trivial sum over non-perturbative sectors, which we compare with the non-perturbative contribution to the closed string expansion.
